Indian Destination Wedding 101: Travel Visas, Passports, Airport to Hotel Transport, Excursions and Tours

Part of the charm of a destination wedding is the adventure of travelling to a far off land to experience a different place and culture with not only your soulmate but also your closest family and friends. That group togetherness is a difficult experience to replicate with a local Indian wedding. So a destination wedding is one of those once in a lifetime things -- something you’ll cherish for the rest of your life.

But all good things do require some effort. With Indian destination weddings, the grunt work is all about the pre-travel coordination. Firstly, it’s about making sure everyone is on same page before you can expect them to arrive all at the same place and at the same time. If certain loved ones are in the must-be-there category, then take the time to make sure they are available to travel on your dream destination wedding dates.

If some of those guests are from a country other than USA or Canada, a tourist visa may be required for your wedding destination. For example, if you have relatives travelling from India and your destination wedding is in Mexico, those India passport holders will each need a Mexico tourist visa. If they are important enough to you to want to invite them from halfway across the world, you’ll probably want to remind them to get this done on time.

Another thing to consider is transport to and from the airport. Yes, all-inclusive resorts have everything you’ll ever need while staying there. But first, you have to get to the hotel. That means taxis, shuttles, buses, or private transfers. At the Cancun airport for instance, private companies run transfers directly to the resorts allowing you to transport your guests en masse in vans or buses. It’s recommended that you book these transfers well in advance of your arrival date. So it’s worth knowing the intricacies of airport to hotel transportation of your particular destination.

Once you are at the resort, you’ll want to some things together (non-wedding related) as a large group. That means fun activities at the resort, but also off-site tours, excursions or adventures. Again, due to the size of the group, you’ll want to do some pre-planning. Depending on how long you are staying, fitting them into your schedule could mean not having a formal wedding related event (haldi ceremony, mehendi night, etc) every single day leading up to the wedding.

Finally, you’ll also want to book these events in advance to ensure you don’t miss out. Many of these can be purchased with resort credits. For instance, Palace Resorts has a program that earns you more credits the longer your stay -- credits that can be used for so many different activities, including spa days, golf days, tour of Mayan ruins.
