Indian Market Demographics

As a resort in North America, your target market will be Indians who live in North America. Fortunately for you, the Indian market just continues to get larger and larger. The US Census revealed that the Asian Indian population growth rate in the United States was a staggering 69.37% from 2000 to 2010. At this point in time, there are about 3.1 million Indians who have legally immigrated to the US.

Indians are now among the largest ethnic groups in the United States. In fact, there are now as many Indians in the US, as there are Native Americans (Amerindians). Perhaps Columbus was unknowingly predicting America’s future when he mistakenly believed he had discovered India when landing in the New World 500 years ago.

The early immigrants to the US were the Punjabis, as they made their way in the early 1900s mostly to the west coast, settling in California (and in places like Vancouver Canada). A wave of mainly students and professionals followed in the 1950s. Then with the elimination of immigration quotas in 1965, larger waves of immigrants arrived in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

With the Internet becoming a real thing in the 1990s, technologically skilled Indians made their way to Silicon Valley en masse between 1995 and 2000. As an extension of that tech focussed immigration, there are now Indian-born CEOs at Microsoft (Satya Nadella), Google (Sundar Pichai), and Adobe (Shantanu Narayen). And undoubtedly, more are headed to the C-suite, as at least one in eight Silicon Valley startups is founded by an Indian American (including Indian Wedding Site).

These latter waves of big salary immigrants has pushed Indians to the very top of the economic heap in the US as an ethnic community. The Pew Research Center estimates the median income for Indian-American families in 2010 ($88,000) to be nearly twice the national average. That's no surprise when you consider 75% of Indian-Americans hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. That's more than double the US average at less than 30%.
