FAQ: Hiring a Hair Stylist
As with any other vendor, you want to make sure you ask all of the right questions before you sign on the dotted line. Read on to find a list of frequently asked questions for your potential wedding day hair stylist.

Before the trial you should have your wedding clothing purchased or at least have a good idea of the style of it. It is also important to have any head-pieces so they can be adjusted with your hair style. If you are planning on growing your hair out or changing your style dramatically, schedule the trial closer to the wedding. An ideal time would be 2-4 months before the wedding. However, some stylists are booked in advance so make appointments for trials much earlier.

This is entirely up to you. If you find your dream stylist during the first trial, go with your gut instinct. It’s also normal to schedule multiple trials until you find the stylist for you.

Trial costs range depending on the stylist. Some will offer them for free and others may charge anywhere from $20 to $100. Most stylists will factor this payment into your final cost if you choose them as your stylist for the wedding. However, it is important to straighten out these details before hiring the stylist.

Talk to the stylist about what flowers work best with your hairstyle. If possible, bring flowers to the trial.

Some stylists will spend the trial trying out a few different styles if that is what you want. However, others will have a set trial length and may not be able to. It is recommended that you come into the trial with a good idea of what you are looking for.

This is something that differs based on culture and the region you are from. Some stylists do not require a tip but others may expect 10-15% of the trial cost. Trust your judgment or find out from others who have used the same stylist. You can also be up-front and ask the stylist when making the appointment. As a rule of thumb, if the trial is being offered for free, definitely tip.

This is why taking a picture of your hair after the trial is so important. If you feel it is something minor that needs to be changed, contact the stylist and see what arrangements can be made for another trial. If you feel that it is something the stylist is not capable of doing, make a trial appointment with another stylist. Bring the pictures and be clear about what you would like changed.

Make the most of contacts you have in the town and do your research thoroughly. You won’t have the advantage of being able to schedule repeated trials so you will have to get it right. Try to get a few trials in during a visit before the wedding.

This may be fine if you are having a late afternoon or evening wedding but is definitely not possible for a morning wedding. See if the stylist requires a traveling fee or some other compensation. If it is not at all possible, we recommend you find a stylist who can travel.

This depends on how many additional people there are and how much time you have before the wedding for everyone to get ready. If you are having an afternoon wedding, you may only need one stylist. However, earlier weddings may require multiple stylists. Talk this over with the stylist as she will best be able to determine the need based on your wedding day situation.

Many South Asians have multiple ceremonies and a reception on the same day which require outfit changes and therefore possible hair style changes or touch-ups. Figure out in advance if you will need someone to do your hair more than once on the wedding day and alert the stylist of this before the trial.
